Background

Barnardos is Ireland’s largest children’s charity, providing a range of support services in the heart of disadvantaged communities all over the country.

Innovate have worked with Barnardos since 2015, helping their IT department easily manage this national network of service centres.

The Solution

“We were approached by Innovate in 2015 and were presented with the Microsoft Office 365 solution for non-profits,” said James Somers, IT manager at Barnardos.

“Innovate were the first IT partner that really looked at our organisation at a strategic level. Other providers were just interested in selling us a server or something like that, so they were always coming in at a lower level.

“But Innovate took a much bigger look at the organisation’s architecture and were able to recommend solutions that solved a lot of problems for us.

“Since then, Innovate have supported us through necessary infrastructural upgrades, improving our communications, network security, encryption, and a variety of other tasks.

“A lot of the work has involved the possibility of interruption to service, but Innovate has been instrumental in ensuring that everything works seamlessly and is always very well communicated.”

With 36 branches nationwide, there were inconsistencies in terms of Barnardos’ equipment, security policies and on-premise LAN firewall management at each remote site.

This overall lack of transparency not only made solving problems very difficult, but also posed security threats and increased costs with significant spend on content filtering per month.

“We have 36 branches nationwide, which was really becoming unmanageable for us, as well as the cost of securing each location,” James said.

The Result

“Innovate now provide managed WiFi for all our locations and security from Cisco Meraki that includes content filtering, so we can easily block certain websites.

“We manage all this through a cloud-based dashboard which allows us to automate updates and patches.”

Innovate provide 24/7 IT support from a state-of-the-art network operations centre in Gorey, Co Wexford.

This professionally managed service desk offers clients peace of mind, with a guaranteed immediate response to emergency situations, 365 days a year.

“We had a problem a couple of weeks ago with some equipment failure in the office and after speaking with Michael (Redmond, Professional Services Lead, Innovate) we were able to get back up and running pretty quickly,” James said.

“We have our own IT staff here, as well as myself, so Innovate speak our language, which helps things move swiftly when a problem does occur.

“Innovate have been – and are – a real pleasure to work with and we believe we have benefitted hugely from their professionalism and ready availability.”
